DISPLAY DEVICES INSTALLS CUSTOM FLAT PANEL ENCLOSURES AT CU's ATLAS BUILDING

January, 2007, Arvada, CO. USA -- www.displaydevices.com -- At the University of Colorado the new $31 million ATLAS building is a unique facility designed to focus on the convergence of technology, media and the arts. ATLAS stands for Alliance for Technology, Learning and Society.

Located in the heart of the campus, ATLAS includes a state-of-the-art black-box performance space, a modern broadcast production studio, a large video wall in the building's lobby, a film screening room, a technology-enhanced auditorium, videoconferencing rooms and outdoor flat panels. The facilities are open to students of all majors.

"One of our goals, maybe somewhat unusual in an academic setting, is to draw people into the facility. With most campus buildings people just walk by unless they have classes or business to attend to. The ATLAS building is meant to be a cultural changing building, and so it is important to get people to experience what's going on inside. That's why we extended the media displays to the exterior, so we could draw people into the facility and showcase what's going on inside" said Bobby Schnabel, Vice Provost for Academic and Campus Technology.

Display Devices designed and manufactured three Outdoor Flat Panel Enclosures to protect LCD flat panels from the weather and people. The enclosures have integrated air conditioning and heating with an RS-232 thermostatic interface, ½" polycarbonate window, stainless steel construction with a decorative egg shaped shroud. The enclosures house 42" displays but were designed for upgradeability to 50" display panels.

"We provided Display Devices with architectural renderings then they in turn provided us with mechanical build drawings, integrating features like maintenance access, comprehensive electronics package and heating and air conditioning. The enclosures have 42" displays but they were designed to accommodate 50" displays in the future. Everything was built and delivered like they designed," stated Tracey Dailey of CEAVCO Audio Visual.

Many parties were involved with the design and construction of this facility. CEAVCO Audio Visual provided equipment and installation services. Daryl Surface project manager said, "Installing the enclosures was a learning project. It took us one day to install the first unit, then less than a day to install the other two. Our biggest hurdle was dealing with the overall size and weight of the units. We drilled anchor bolts into the block wall then removed the doors. Due to the weight we used a material lift to raise the boxes up to the structural mounting points."

Good looking enclosures for a good looking building.
